10 Unexpected Truths About Running A Small Business From Your Home

  1. You will be working LITERALLY 24/7. When you are not actually “working” on something you will be thinking about working and all the things on your to-do list. I feel like I am never not working and it can get VERY tiring.
  2. Your business will most likely become your number one priority over EVERYTHING. This is the big one that I need to work on. I put my work above everything in my life, my husband, my family, my own mental and physical health, and even my fur babies sometimes. It is so hard to be trying to grow a business as well as take time for yourself and your family when all you want is for your new venture to succeed.
  3. There will be times when you do not know how you are going to pay the bills. Everyone goes through ups and downs when it comes to making money from home.
  4. You probably won’t pay yourself fairly, or at all, for at least the first 2-3 years of having your own small business.
  5. There will be countless sleepless nights where you are trying so hard to meet a deadline you set for yourself, but somehow things still get pushed to the last minute.
  6. Your family and friends will not understand. Personally, I am a handmade maker and so many family and friends think it is so “cute” what I do for a living and they just do not see all the hard work that goes into every little thing I do every day.
  7. What you start out doing will most likely not be what your business becomes known for. SO MANY small business friends of mine started out doing something completely different than what they are doing today and they are all so much happier doing what they do now and are so much more successful than they ever would have been if they stuck themselves in the box they made at the start of their small business journey.
  8. It is not as glamorous as some people make it out to be. It is hard work that is often thankless. You do not have a boss standing over you thanking you for your hard work or rewarding you with a holiday bonus for doing such a great job all year long. And you do not have all the time in the world to meet up with friends for lunch dates 3 times a week.
  9. You will probably work 100% harder than you have at any other job. As soon as you are doing something you love, that only has your name on it you become so crazy about it and will work day and night to show off how good you are at what you do.
  10. There will be days where you realize at 7pm that you have not changed out of your pajamas from the previous night, you have not eaten and you can’t remember if you even went to the bathroom today. You will get so wrapped up in your work that things just wall to the wayside sometimes.
